The Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act is a compact between states that controls how jurisdiction is determined in cases that cross states lines. This issues often come to light when one party moves to another state and wishes that the new residential state to take control of the order or simply to recognized an child custody order issued in another state.

Change of jurisdiction is not automatic and some states because of continuing issues in the originating state decide to retrain control of the order. States often will retain jurisdiction over a child support order for the life of that order.

These are very tricky issues and not one for the typical pro se to attempt on their own because you will have not only your home state’s law to deal with but those of the new state.
